What is Prometheus Payment?

PROMETHEUS Payment® is a system designed to help physicians and patients reach a higher quality of care at a lower cost and to reduce incidents of complications of care (Potentially Avoidable Complications = PAC's).

On average, 40 cents out of every dollar spent on treating patients with chronic conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF), diabetes, hypertension, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and coronary artery disease (CAD) could be saved simply by eliminating complications that arise from poor management of the patient.  Prometheus Payment is a payment model based on Evidence Informed Case Rates (ECR's) that "scores" providers and pays them based on the care they provide according to well-established clinical practice guidelines and expert opinion, and rewards them when they avoid PAC's.

The Employers' Coalition on Health (ECOH), headquartered in Rockford, IL, has been chosen as a national lead pilot site for the Project.

 

Why Rockford, IL?

ECOH and the Rockford market are "typical" of health care and employer markets throughout the United States. Since the Prometheus methodology is designed to be transparent and accessible to any organization that should choose to use it, it was important to utilize a pilot site that would garner easily translatable results: "if it can work in Rockford, IL it can work in Anytown, USA".

 

The ECOH Pilot

Beginning January 1, 2010, ECOH will begin running live claims through the Prometheus engine and will track ECR's by patient for each calendar year. For 2010, ECOH has partnered with SwedishAmerican Health System, OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, and Rockford Health System to run the pilot using their hospitals and affiliated physicians. As data become available, ECOH will share the results in order to improve the Prometheus methodology.
